病態互聯網使用 (pathological
Internet use，PIU)、網路沉溺是近十年來愈來愈多人研究的公共衛生議題，有指網路沉溺問題在亞洲國家諸如中國、韓國、台灣等尤為嚴重，而網路沉溺亦被發現與外顥自尊 (explicit self-esteem)
相關 (Stieger & Burger, 2010)。
一項研究 (Morahan-Martin & Schumacher, 2000) 以網路研究方法，嘗試探討PIU之盛行率及相關因素，371位英國學生作為模本，發現 18.3% 的受訪者有 PIU 之情況，而出現PIU 問題的學生似乎有較低的（外顯）自尊，但研究沒有發現有 PIU 問題之學生會出現較多健康問題。詳見Morahan-Martin & Schumacher (2000) 的研究。
