“We silver the network” - a multi-generational house in Germany

Wege aus der einsamkeit e.V. is a multi-generational house (Mehrgenerationenhaus, 多代屋 /多代中心) in Germany which particularly serves the age and their slogan is “we silver the network”. It aims to show elder’s  (age 65+) momentum, pep, vitality, diversity; to have fun with elder; to see elders are cheerful and filled with desire; to pay more attention to the age; and it wants the integration of different generations. Their service helps elder people overcomes those challenges brought by digitization and signature service includes “Spark of Life (seniors flash mob)”, speed dating for 65+, web-based services for the elderly and their families, training courses for 65+ (e.g. discussion about online banking, dealing with tablet and smartphone etc.). And new concepts like O2O (online-to-offline) and P2P (peer-to-peer) in service design are popular among elders!

Same as the situation in Hong Kong, Germany is an aging society and a report published in 2012
predicted that by 2060 every third German would be aged 65 or over. Increasing individualization and dissolution of traditional familiar structures urge this innovative community-based service model to fulfill the long term care needs for elder people. Under this background, multigenerational houses were established in Lower Saxony in 2003 by Ursula von der Leyen, then family minister of the region, now federal defence minister. When she was promoted to the government, she took her big idea with her: 500 centres across the country were founded and given €40,000 a year each. The idea was to bring together under one roof groups that had previously operated in isolation from one another, i.e. childcare groups, youth centres, mother centres, community centres for the elderly and advice. I dream of the first multi-generational house in Hong Kong.
